Clinton Dean Stays: A Wild Coast Sun vacay that ticks all the boxes

The drive to Wild Coast Sun takes us through scenic beach landscapes and small towns, and I sit in the driver’s seat in awe. This is my fourth trip to this 4 star resort, but every time I visit, I discover something new. On my first trip here, I took a blistering 12km hike to the Petrified Forest, the stretch of beach between the Wild Coast Sun and the Mzamba River.

While I felt overwhelmed by the heat and the scorching sand on my bare foot, it was an informative experience. I learned that this forest represents the fossilisation remains of an ancient marine environment deposited during the Cretaceous period some 85 million years ago.

And that the inter-tidal reefs exposed on the beach during low tide and the cliffs on both sides of the Mzamba Estuary contain a collection of large petrified logs, marine reptiles, including ammonites, giant clams blackened pieces of bone preserved in phosphate, turtle scutes and shells or shelly fragments.

On my second visit, I went on a cruise along the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve where I got to take in the natural beauty and learn more about the award-winning movies and shows that were filmed here.

My third visit was during the pandemic. I wore a mask and rode a horse along the Mzamba Beach.

This trip is a mix of family time and a workcation, which I am excited to see how I juggle.

Wild Coast Sun wonders

Flanked by ocean, river, lagoon and 750 hectares of lush indigenous bush, Wild Coast Sun is more than just a casino pitstop. Here, you can enjoy its water park, games area for children, outdoor sports, a top ranked 18-hole golf course, and a range of foodie experiences.

This year, the Wild Coast Sun was voted the ‘Best Luxury Beach Resort in South Africa’ by Luxury Lifestyle Awards.

We checked in at 4pm, and as it is holiday season, the resort’s lobby was packed with new arrivals, family reunions, and lots of chatter.

Our Sea Facing Luxury Twin Room is kitted with twin beds, a seating area, shower and bath, aircon, and a balcony overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Navigating the hotel is easy. We took the stairs that connect the different floors when going to the pool, restaurants or to get some fresh air. The lifts gets busy so be prepared to wait a while.

Workcation

The room setup allows you to sip some coffee while replying to your morning emails or logging into a meeting. That, coupled with the high speed internet connection, means you can get all your work done timeously with more free time to explore the resort.

Family time

In between work, I spent time with my family, taking in the sights and sounds of the resort. They spent most of the trip by the pool or at the beach while I ticked off the day’s work schedule. The real exploring only started after 5pm for me.

With a strong focus on family activities, there’s plenty to do for young and old.

Visitors can try paddle-boating, canoeing or simply relaxing on a river cruise at the Mtamvuna River.

Or take a guided walk on the stretch of beach between the Wild Coast Sun and the Mzamba river to see the Petrified Forest.

You can also enjoy a family horseback ride along the beach.

If you’re an adventure seeker, there’s quad biking that takes you to the famous Mzamba Suspension Bridge. The bridge was erected to ensure that people from the nearby villages could get to work and school without having to cross the nearby river.

The kids will enjoy the indoor entertainment  found at the Magic Company and Cosmic Bowling in the Aloha Village. There’s also the first indoor Skypark in South Africa that they can brave.

The entire family will appreciate the adrenalin rush of Wild Waves Water Park, which boasts some of the world’s best water rides. Choose from a gentle Lazy River tube experience to fast-paced, heart-pounding body slides, tube rides and flume experiences.

Foodie experiences

We were on the breakfast and dinner package, which meant we tucked into a spread of breakfast at Chico’s Restaurant every morning. I loved their fresh fruit and yogurt section, the freshly prepared waffles and omelettes, and the bottomless cups of coffee and hot chocolate. With its variety, I was able to try something new at every sitting. Breakfast kept us full for most of the day, and when we felt peckish, we ordered from the slew of fast food eateries available. We dined at Chico’s for dinner. While the buffet was delicious, there should be more vegetarian options.

Maltos, with its doors open for brunch, lunch, and dinner, quickly became my go-to spot. This Mediterranean-inspired eatery offers everything from mouthwatering pasta and pizza to delicious sushi and signature dishes. But it’s not just about the food – their cocktail and wine selection is equally delicious. I couldn’t resist enjoying a glass or two of their margaritas.
Overall, Wild Coast is a perfect family destination.

Perhaps I should plan trip no 5 this summer?
